Introduction
More scholarships are available than you may think. It's worth your time and effort to seek out relevant scholarships and apply for them.
Steps
Step One
Start looking for scholarships at least one year before entering college.
Step Two
Consider whether you are a member of an underrepresented group, in financial need, or interested in certain fields of study. Scholarships are available for those with special talents in many areas, including sports, art, science and music.
Step Three
Think about applying for a fellowship - a scholarship for graduate students - if you want to go to graduate school.
Step Four
Recognize what you can expect from a scholarship when you apply for it. Some schools offer to pay all your expenses, while others only pay for room and board.
Step Five
Use a No. 2 pencil to complete the application form.
Step Six
Be prepared to answer general questions such as name, address, social security number, date of birth, citizenship status and marital status.
Step Seven
Provide any necessary financial information such as total family income, number of children in your household, and number of children in college. Round dollar amounts to whole number values.
Step Eight
Supply information about the talent required by the scholarship for which you are applying.
Step Nine
Mail all the paperwork to the address listed on the application.
Step Ten
Endure the weeks or months of waiting to find out whether you got the scholarship and how much money you will receive from it.
Tips & Warnings
- Talk to your school counselor; he or she is paid to help you make decisions about your future.
- Get a lot of community hours - If you participate in a lot of activities in and out of school, and get a lot of community hours, you can get a scholarship by working hard. And of course there are other ways to achieve a scholarship, like being good at sports.
- Do what you love - It is important when you are trying to get a scholarship that you participate in activities that you love and have a connection with. If you do this, you will be more likely to have a better commitment to the activity. This means that you will prosper more than kids that only do clubs or activities to be put on their application for college. You only have one life. Make sure you do something you truly enjoy!
- Start Early - Start pretending like you are a senior in your freshman or sophomore year of high school. Get to know your guidance counselor, let them know what you are looking for, and start sending for applications on your own. When you get the application, fill it out like it is your senior year. By the time you are a senior, you really will be ready. I did this and as a senior I've already won thousands of dollars in scholarships. It works!
- CONNECTIONS - You need to be nice to your teachers and very respectful because their the one's who write up the recomnendations in the end and those recommendations GET YOU FAR!! Plus, teachers have CONNECTIONS in which they can personally go and apply for scholarships for you and when teachers to that, then you best expect a BIG scholarship and a guaranteed order. So be very, very, good to your teachers because their the one's with CONNECTIONS. GOOD LUCK AND TRY, TRY, TRY!
- Apply! - The more you apply to, the greater your chances of being awarded the scholarships. I applied to 4 and was awarded 3 ($2,000). Also, if you're going to go to a JC and transfer, many scholarships have an option of being held until needed (2 years, usually).
- Two words.... - Two words: community service. That's all you need to know. If I had known this my freshman year, it would have been so much easier.
- Study Time - The key to getting a good scholarship is to study very hard, but do it gradually. If you try to cram it all in at one time, then it'll all turn into a big blur. Also, when most people hear the word "study," they think of sitting at a desk reading a book that's as thick as an encyclopedia and as boring as counting sheep. However, the word "study" just means trying to learn things. You could try acting out a part from a book, or you could imagine it in your head and try to put yourself in the person's shoes. Good luck!
- Process - Go to scholarship Web sites and your counseling office for applications. Get a list of possible scholarships, and just apply to a lot of them. If they ask you to pay to apply, it might be a scam. G'luck.
- Get involved - One thing you should be sure of is to get involved in the community, school or just anything at all! It really helps because it looks good on your application. Good luck.
