Mendocino College Foundation Provides $100,000 in Scholarships

Applications Due March 1

UKIAH— The Mendocino College Foundation announces they will provide $100,000 in scholarships for academic year 2007-08, an increase of $31,000 from the prior year.

“The Foundation board appreciates the opportunity to play a role in the lives of these deserving students and to encourage them in their academic career,” notes Wilda Shock, Foundation president.

For anyone planning to attend Mendocino College, a scholarship is a big advantage in helping to pay for the costs of tuition and books. Last year, the College distributed 102 scholarships totaling $87,520. New students, high school students, returning and continuing students are all eligible to apply for the scholarships. Applications are due Thursday, March 1.

“Scholarships are one of the best sources of financial assistance for students to use in pursuing their educational goals and dreams because they do not have to be paid back,” states Dr. Donald Moore, Dean of Student Services.

A single application enables students to apply for all available scholarships. The 2007-8 Scholarship Application is available online at www.mendocino.edu or it can also be picked up at the three College locations: Ukiah Campus, 1000 Hensley Creek Road, 468-3105; the Lake Center, 1005 Parallel Drive, Lakeport, 263-4944; and the Willits Center, 11 Marin Street, 459-6224.

The College is providing two free workshops to assist students in completing the scholarship application: February 1, 12:00-1:00 p.m. at the Lake Center, Room 7040; February 2, 12:30-1:30 p.m. in Room 1230, Ukiah Campus; and February 6, 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. at the Willits Center.

“We are delighted to reward high-performing students for their dedication to academic excellence,” Shock said. “The Foundation is sponsoring the 25th annual Academic Awards Ceremony where the various donors will present scholarships to students, a thoroughly enjoyable evening celebrating student success.” This year’s Academic Awards Ceremony, where scholarships are presented, is scheduled for Friday, May 11, 2007 at 6:00 p.m., in the Center Theatre, Mendocino College Ukiah campus. The event is open to the public. The Mendocino College Foundation funds the largest number of scholarships at the College. For 2006-07, it provided 40 scholarships ranging in size from $1,000 to $2,500, totaling $69,000. The Foundation first began providing scholarships in 1988 and since then has provided over $400,000 in scholarships to 500 students.
The Mendocino College Foundation 2007 Scholarship Committee members include Jim Angell, Kristi Barrington, John Behnke, Donna Berry, Harry Bistrin, Peggy Campbell-DeBolt, Rhonada Clausen, Channing Cornell (Chair), Tom Herman, Tod Kong, Gary Smith, and Tommy Thornhill.
